In 3 days time we fly off to Australia for a 3 month extended holiday. Our youngest son lives near Perth in WA and our youngest daughter lives 150 miles south of Perth, in 'hippytown', in the middle of thousands of square miles of forest. So it's going to be, as usual, a wonderful and varied trip. And it's over a year since we've seen our youngest son, and over 2 years since I've seen our youngest daughter. And I think the last time we celebrated Christmas together was in 2005.

But the main reason for the trip is that our youngest grandson (1 of 6 grandchildren) will be 1 year old on Thursday. We've never seen him, in the flesh so to speak (photos and video clips are okay but not the same), so we're obviously both very excited. There are so many useful things that only a grandad can teach a kid. Like how to blow bubbles out of your nose, and how to draw stick people on the newly painted walls. Granted, he may still be a little young to hold a crayon, but I can at least show him the basics.

My Premium (I'm still stubbornly refusing to refer to myself as a core member) membership expires in about 4 weeks and I'm still not going to renew it. Basically, I'm not going to be using it that much while we're away and my opinion on the shitty way that DA is being managed and the direction it's moving in hasn't changed.  When I come back to UK  at the end of January I may just close the account and have done. I took a look at my recent use of DA a couple of days ago and almost closed it down anyway. I'm just not doing anything constructive here anymore and it dawned on me that DA has actually in some ways become an obstacle that's helping to prevent me from doing any art instead of being somewhere where I can show it. It's mainly to do with the rather irritating OCD that I'm still fighting. I'm winning the battle.  It no longer takes me 20 minutes to lock and then unlock and relock the house before I can go anywhere but some aspects of my life are still being overdriven by habit based behaviour rather than goal based . My use of DA is a good example.  I thought maybe closing my accounts would be a good way of breaking the habit, but to be honest if I did I'd probably create another one and then I'd feel even worse. So I decided to leave it open and use 3 months of limited access to technology as a way of helping to deal with it.

Physically I've got my health back after my near death thing last year - I'm probably healthier and fitter than I've been since I was in my thirties. I'm walking 13 miles twice, sometimes 3 times, a week and when I get home I don't even feel it. I think the fresh air has helped too - sitting on an exercise bike watching reruns of Star Trek was beginning to get tedious. Getting fit is one of those things where a mild dose of OCD is actually quite beneficial - in the early stages when the weight is falling off of you in noticeable amounts and when your stamina is increasing significantly, it's very much goal based but as you progress and the changes become less noticeable, the goals are harder to quantify or qualify. Fortunately exercise and good diet has now just become a habit. Hopefully I can keep it that way.

So good luck to all of you. Thanks for your support and friendship and have a happy and safe Christmas when it finally arrives. :)
